Smart Traffic for the Cities of Tomorrow Examples from the Nordics and Beyond

Introduction
How do we build cities where people thrive, the air is clean, and traffic flows smoothly without dominating the space between buildings? The answer lies in smart traffic planning where technology, urban design, and behavioural change work together. In this article, we explore some of the most inspiring examples, both internationally and here in the Nordic region.

1. Copenhagen A Cycling Paradise and Future-Proof Model
Copenhagen has long been at the forefront. With over 390 km of cycle paths and “bicycle superhighways” connecting suburbs with the city centre, the city has drastically reduced car dependency. Nearly 49% of all commuters travel by bike year round.

Effect: Lower emissions, improved public health, and higher quality of life in the city.

2. Stockholm Congestion Tax and Smart Public Transport
Stockholm introduced a congestion tax as early as 2007 controversial at the time, but it proved effective. Traffic decreased by around 20%, and public transport saw a boost. SL’s commuter trains and metro are now integrated with real-time data, and investments in cycling infrastructure have followed.

Effect: Lower emissions, more efficient traffic flow, and a clear example of how pricing can influence behaviour.

3. Oslo Car-Free City Centre and Urban Transformations
Since 2019, Oslo has worked to make large parts of the inner city car-free. Parking spaces were replaced by benches, green areas, and bike lanes. Through the “Car Free Livability” project, residents have gained more room for movement and social interaction.

Effect: Sharp reduction in car traffic, improved air quality, and increased satisfaction among residents and visitors.

4. Helsinki Mobility Data and App Based Urban Planning
Helsinki is testing “Mobility as a Service” (MaaS) through the app Whim, where residents can plan, book, and pay for all types of transport from buses to rental cars in one system. The goal: to make travelling without a car just as convenient as with one.

Effect: Reduced private car use, improved traffic flow, and better decision-making tools for urban planners.

5. Lund Tramway for the Future
Lund has developed a modern tramway between the central station and the ESS/MAX IV research centre. The project is a key part of the city’s vision for sustainable urban development, connecting different parts of the city in an environmentally friendly way.

Effect: Reduced car traffic in newly developed areas and a clear sustainability profile for a growing knowledge-based city.

6. Barcelona Superblocks (Superilles)
Entire city blocks are closed to through traffic and prioritise walking, cycling, and social spaces. A model that has also inspired cities in Sweden.

Effect: Significantly lower noise levels, fewer accidents, and improved wellbeing.

Building Smart Traffic – and Better Lives
Three keys to success:

  • Bold and long-term policy

  • Smart technology and real-time data

  • Traffic that adapts to people not the other way around
