Valencia is a city that has it all – fantastic weather, long beaches, vibrant culture, and a cuisine that delights the taste buds. But perhaps the best part? Valencia is significantly cheaper to live in compared to many other major European cities. Whether you're considering moving here permanently or just want to understand how much a stay might cost, it's good to be aware of the key expenses.

Housing – Affordable Compared to Other Major Cities

Housing prices in Valencia are much lower than in Madrid or Barcelona. If you want to live in the heart of the city – in areas like Ruzafa or El Carmen – a one-bedroom apartment can cost between €700–€1,000 per month. However, if you're open to living a bit further from the center, in areas like Benimaclet or Patraix, you can find apartments for €500–€700 per month.

If you're looking to buy property, the price per square meter in central areas is around €2,000–€3,000, which is quite affordable compared to many other coastal cities in Spain.

Food and Groceries – One of Valencia’s Biggest Advantages

One of the greatest perks of living in Valencia is that you can enjoy fantastic food at very reasonable prices.

  • A three-course lunch menu at a regular restaurant usually costs €10–€15.
  • Dining at a more upscale restaurant? Expect to pay €30–€50 per person, including wine.
  • Grocery shopping for home cooking can cost around €150–€250 per month, especially if you buy from local markets and avoid imported meats and delicacies.

And don’t forget – Valencia is the birthplace of paella, so enjoying an authentic Paella Valenciana by the coast is a must!

Transport – Cheap and Convenient

Public transport in Valencia is both affordable and easy to use:

  • A monthly pass for buses and the metro costs around €45.
  • A single ticket costs between €1.50–€2, depending on the zone.
  • Cycling is a popular option! The city’s bike rental system, Valenbisi, costs only €30 per year for unlimited short rides.

If you prefer driving, fuel is cheaper than in Northern Europe, but parking in the city center can be challenging.

Other Expenses – What Else to Budget For?

Apart from housing, food, and transport, there are other expenses to consider:

  • Gym & Fitness: A gym membership costs €30–€50 per month, depending on the facilities.
  • Internet & Mobile: High-speed fiber internet costs around €30–€40 per month, and a mobile phone plan can be around €15–€25.
  • Leisure & Entertainment:
    • A cinema ticket costs around €7–€9.
    • A beer at a bar is €2–€3.
    • A coffee rarely costs more than €1.50.

Conclusion – Valencia: A City Where You Get More for Your Money

Valencia is one of the most affordable major cities in Western Europe, especially when compared to places like Stockholm, London, or Paris. Here, you get a high quality of life without having to empty your wallet every month.

If you value sunshine, the sea, delicious food, and a relaxed lifestyle, while still enjoying a dynamic city with good infrastructure and reasonable prices, then Valencia is definitely worth considering!
