Tokyo, the vibrant and technologically advanced capital of Japan, is a top destination for expats, students, and professionals. But what does it actually cost to live here? Let's take a look at everyday life and the real expenses in the city.

Housing – Affordable Compared to Other Global Cities

Rent in Tokyo is more affordable than in cities like London or New York. If you want to live in central areas like Shibuya, Shinjuku, or Minato, expect to pay between €950–€1,900 per month for a modern one-bedroom apartment. In outer districts like Setagaya or Koto, you can find housing for around €500–€950 per month. Those willing to share an apartment can expect to pay between €320–€640 per month.

Food and Groceries – High Quality at Various Price Points

Tokyo offers a wide variety of food options, from budget-friendly ramen shops to luxury sushi restaurants. A typical grocery bill for one person can range from €190–€320 per month if you cook most meals at home. A lunch at a local eatery costs between €5–€10, while dinner at a mid-range restaurant can range from €19–€45 per person.

Transport – Efficient and Reasonably Priced

Tokyo has one of the most extensive and efficient public transport systems in the world. A monthly commuter pass costs between €64–€130, depending on the distance traveled. Cycling is also an option, though less common in central areas. Taxis and ride-sharing services are available but can be expensive, with short trips within the city center costing between €6–€19.

Entertainment and Leisure – A City of Endless Possibilities

Tokyo offers an incredible entertainment and nightlife scene, from arcades and karaoke bars to museums and Michelin-starred restaurants. A cinema ticket costs around €12, while a gym membership ranges between €45–€95 per month. A coffee at a café costs €2.50–€4, a beer at a bar costs €3–€5, and a cocktail in a stylish venue is around €6–€13.

Summary – How Far Does Your Budget Go?

For a single person, a reasonable monthly budget in Tokyo ranges from €1,600–€3,200, depending on housing and lifestyle choices. For families, costs are naturally higher, but Tokyo offers a unique blend of modern convenience, rich culture, and safety.

Tokyo is a city where tradition meets innovation, offering endless opportunities and experiences—at a relatively reasonable cost compared to other global capitals. Perhaps it’s this balance between affordability, efficiency, and culture that makes it such a desirable place to live.
