Tallinn, the charming capital of Estonia, has become an increasingly popular destination for digital nomads, expats, and long-term visitors. But what does it actually cost to live here? Let's take a look at everyday life and the real expenses in the city.

Housing – Cheaper Than Western Europe, But Not Free

Rent in Tallinn varies significantly depending on the area. If you want to live in the city center, such as the medieval Old Town or the trendy districts of Kalamaja and Telliskivi, expect to pay between €700–€1,200 per month for a modern one-bedroom apartment. On the outskirts of the city, you can find housing for around €400–€600 per month. For those willing to share an apartment, a shared accommodation can cost as little as €250–€400 per month.

Food and Groceries – Local or Imported?

One of Tallinn's advantages is that groceries are relatively affordable, especially if you buy locally produced products. A typical grocery bill for one person can amount to €200–€300 per month if you cook most meals at home. Dining out frequently can add up—lunch at a local café costs between €7–€12, while dinner at a mid-range restaurant can range from €20–€40 per person.

Transport – Convenient and Affordable

Public transport in Tallinn is both efficient and reasonably priced. A monthly pass for buses, trams, and trains costs around €30, but if you are a registered Tallinn resident, it’s completely free! Taxis and ride-sharing services like Bolt are also cheap compared to other European capitals—a short trip within the city center rarely exceeds €5–€7.

Entertainment and Leisure – Affordable and Diverse

Tallinn has a vibrant cultural and entertainment scene. A cinema ticket costs around €8–€10, while a gym membership ranges between €30–€60 per month depending on the facilities. Bars and nightclubs are also relatively affordable—a beer at a pub costs €4–€6, while a cocktail at a more upscale bar is around €10–€12.

Summary – How Far Does Your Budget Go?

For a single person, a reasonable monthly budget in Tallinn ranges from €1,200–€2,000, depending on housing and lifestyle choices. For families, costs are naturally higher, but the city offers a balance between modern European living standards and relatively low living costs compared to Western Europe.

Tallinn is a city where you can live comfortably without feeling like your money is slipping through your fingers. Perhaps it’s this combination of history, technology, and affordability that makes it such an attractive place to call home.
